Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria)
Can tolerate all light conditions.
Low to average water needs.
Size: 15-20 ft tall x 10-15 ft wide
Bloom Time: Spring, Summer, Fall
Yaupon holly is a hardy, popular shrub or small tree for your garden. It can be pruned to a formal shrub, or left to grow into tree form where its branches provide protection for birds. In the fall, it produces red berries which are eaten by birds and used as holiday decoration. The leaves contain more caffeine by weight than both coffee beans and green tea and they have the highest caffeine content of any plant native to North America. It is also high in antioxidants and less bitter than green tea. You must have a male and female plant to get berries, but nursery plants are typically female.
