White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba)

Full sun to part shade

Low water needs

Size: 2-5' tall x 2-4' wide

Bloom time: Spring

This winter dormant, lacy shrub, produces lovely white blooms in the spring and summer. It looks best mixed in with a wildflower planting. It does not tolerate root disturbance, so plant it in a place where the mature plant is intended to remain. It is a host plant for wild indigo duskywing (Erynnis baptisiae) and Zarucco duskywing (Erynnis zarucco) butterflies. Deer and rabbits will eat the foliage. The plant is able to tolerate the wildlife munching because of its long taproot.

Many species of Baptisia were historically used to produce a blue dye, hence the common name of the genus, indigo.
