Wafer Ash (Ptelea Trifoliata)

Part shade to full shade

Low to average water needs

Size:    15-20 ft tall

Bloom Time: Spring

Wafer ash is a small deciduous, understory tree that rarely exceeds 20 feet in height. It is one of our native host plants for the giant swallowtail butterfly. The fruits are samaras, a type of dry fruit, each with a single seed encased in a papery covering with a winged edge surrounding the seed. Also known as hop tree, the fruits were once used as a substitute for hops in brewing beer. If you wish to use this plant in your landscape, do not plant it in full sun and make sure that it gets average moisture. The fragrant blooms are attractive to many pollinators.
