The royal fern likes rich and moist soil. It is naturally found in swamps and marshes. It needs consistent moisture and will not tolerate drought like conditions. It will tolerate a couple of hours of full sun but will look best in part or full shade. As with the cinnamon fern, royal fern has been commercially exploited so it is illegal to remove from the wild without a permit.
