Cocoplum 'Red Tip' (Chrysobalanus icaco 'Red Tip')
Blooms best in the sun, but will tolerate some shade.
Low water needs.
Size: 4-20 ft tall x 10
Bloom Time: Spring
Red-Tip Cocoplum is terrific as a hedge plant in a home landscape. This native cultivar gets its name from the new growth that has a reddish color. It produces small white flowers in the spring, followed by dark edible fruits that are often made into jelly. Due to the high abundance of fruit, this is also attractive to wildlife. The plants can grow to about 15 feet if you let them - though most of the time they're kept trimmed to around 4 feet. It can tolerate short periods of flooding, but is very drought tolerant after establishment.
The blooms have male and female parts, so you should only need one plant to get fruit.
