Florida Spiny-pod (Matelea floridana)

Full sun to part shade

Low to average water

Size:     10 ft tall

Bloom Time: Spring and Summer

This milkweed vine is a state-endangered species that produces a milky sap when the leaves or stems are cut or injured.  Because it occurs in open sunny locations, it is a great host plant for monarch, queen, and soldier butterflies. This heart leafed shaped vine emerges quickly in the spring and weaves its way through nearby understory vegetation. It’s adaptability to a home landscape makes this a great plant for butterfly enthusiasts. Fun fact: The blooms are mostly pollinated by beetles.

Native to Polk County.
