Coastplain Willow (Salix caroliniana)

Average to very wet

Bloom time: Spring

Size: 25-60 ft tall x 20-40 ft wide

Yellow spring blooms. White fruit. Tolerates flooding. Host plant for the viceroy butterfly and luna moth. Pollinated by wind. Stems are used in basketry. Wood is weak and easily broken. Willow sap contains salicylic acid, which is a natural ingredient of aspirin. Naturally a swamp plant, but can be grown in an upland setting.
