Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)

Full sun to shade

High water needs

Size: 4-5 tall x 1 ft wide

Bloom Time: Summer through fall

This is an incredibly striking wildflower for damp understory areas and along rivers and streams. The flower spikes shoot out of the ground in the spring, followed by beautiful red blooms. It likes continual wet feet, so do not let it dry out. In the winter, it may disappear, but will return in the spring. The blooms may be open for a month and are attractive to hummingbirds and large butterflies. It can be attacked by a variety of insects, so make sure to pick off the bugs or the plant may not recover.
