Bahama Senna (Senna mexicana var. chapmanii)
Full to Part Sun
Average to Low Water Needs
Size: 3-9 ft tall x 6-10 ft wide
Bloom Time: Fall, Winter
This native flowering shrub grows tall and upright and is covered with little yellow flowers in the fall, which are quite attractive next to the dark green leaves. Several different types of sulfur butterflies are attracted to this shrub. It is a relatively short lived shrub, and may decline after five years. But, it readily self seeds in a home landscape. Bahama cassia could be used in the landscape as a specimen plant by itself, or as a screen, hedge, or border. In a sunny location it grows to about 8 feet tall so would make a nice background plant in a shrub border. In the sun, Bahama cassia will be bushy and seldom exceeds a height of 3 to 5 feet; it will obtain a height of 9 feet in partial shade.
* Host plant for the Cloudless Sulphur, Orange-barred Sulphur, and Sleepy Orange butterfly.
